Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

In a previous article I posted based on the above verse I listed what the writer stated as potential causes of “premature death”. One of which is “ neither make thyself overwise “

What does it mean to be “overwise, "and how can this lead to your death prematurely? This was the question I was asked in private.

To understand what it means to be “overwise” we need to put it in context. When you're among people with little knowledge or wisdom and you try to help them understand an issue or a solution to a complex situation, that’s when those who project themselves as leaders, opinion leaders, etc., in the group will rise against you.

To them, you make them look stupid, so they see you as a threat to their status. We see this often just that we don’t take note.

To these people, you are “overwise” ( wiser than them ); as such they will plot against your removal or elimination depending on the group. It happens everywhere be it in the secular or spiritual setting!

Please don’t pretend you’ve not heard, seen or experienced this before. It's part of the Fallen nature of Man.

So the proverb writer was only giving us a warning; do not be “overwise "when you are in the midst of people who are not interested in learning.

When your knowledge and wisdom exceed that of some who surround you, you’ll be seen and labelled by those who dislike and see you as a threat as “overwise”. Those who love learning, will appreciate you.

It’s similar to these instructive admonishments

Proverbs 9:7-9
NIV
Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.

[9] Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

Proverbs 15
KJV
12+ A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

Amos 5
KJV
10+ They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

So if you ask why being " overwise " would contribute to your death prematurely here is the answer.

This is why we've always been told: “In the midst of fools, it is foolishness to be wise !”

Why destroy yourself? Why die before your time? You can avoid, stay safe thus preventing these from happening to you if you know when, where and to whom to speak knowledge and wisdom!

I hope this helps ! You can destroy yourself or die before it is time ; so be wise.
","2026-10-13T19:34:39.354Z",1791920202477]
