The Problem with Self-Comparison
2 Corinthians 10
KJV
12+ For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
Yes, you read it! Measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise !”
Unhealthy, egoistic. Opportunistic rivalry you name it; has no place in the church of the Living God yet our assemblies are filled with these negatives. Sisters comparing themselves with themselves; brothers comparing themselves with themselves!
These comparisons would have been greatly appreciated had they been in things spiritual; unfortunately, they are all in the material.
The church at Corinth comes to mind when we talk about rivalry, as a result of self-comparison! The church was riddled with rivalry so much so that Paul had to step in to stop it! Today we see the same spirit manifesting itself.
Regarding sisters, it is who is more beautiful, dresses more cutely than the other, and has more fans as if beauty is forever, as if the church is a fashion parade! Just look at how “crumbled” your face and skin look today compared with how they looked a few years ago! Yes!
My dear, no matter how much makeup you put in, they rather make you look weird than real. Yes!
The late AB Crentsil in his evergreen song which I often listen to titled; “ Ye Wô A Dè OYè” made this remark about youthful girls who compare and boast of themselves. “ Bobby stand, back tyres are loose”. Yes! Such was many an old woman of yesterday! But how do they look today? A pale shadow!
It is vain if not foolish to compare oneself to another. Everything about us is in transition, beauty fades! We are rendered valueless, as we age with time. Indeed, our greatest enemy is time!
In the 70’s there was this popular song titled “Growing Old” A line reads “ I wish I’ll never grow old!” May we learn not to compete or compare ourselves with each other, these are vanities and create hatred and enmity.
Be happy and content with who you are. You are unique there is none like you. Be proud of who you are do not trade it for who or what someone else looks like!!!
As for me, I am in my own class! So you too, be in your own class, do not compare yourself with or to anybody. If you do as Paul said, you are not a wise person!
In life, there will always be someone higher or lower than you. Be yourself, if some does not like or love you, simply tell them “ they can go to hell and greet the devil, you don’t give a hoot!”
2 Corinthians 10:12
NIV
[12] We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.
A thought.
