Number Our Days!

By John Tamakloe

Number Our Days!

Psalms 90

KJV

12+ So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

How interesting it is that we choose to number our existence on earth by years and not days!

To Moses this numbering scheme we have chosen goes contrary to his liking so He prayed that God should teach him how to focus on each day of his life.

In other words, he is urging us to live day by day, which suggestion agrees with what Jesus taught regarding our daily sustenance. Read it;

Luke 11

KJV

3+ Give us day by day our daily bread.

Did you read it? Day by day!

It is unfortunate that by the time we arrived ( born) this “day by day” command/practice has been replaced with a “year by/on year “ reckoning!

It appears the concept of “monthly salary” was a later introduction by man! This observation is confirmed by the following scriptures which suggest that wages ( daily) are what was practised.

Leviticus 19

KJV

13+ Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Deuteronomy 24

KJV

14+ Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:

15+ At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee.

Luke 3

KJV

14+ And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

Life under the “wages “ scheme of payment appears to be recommended as it satisfies needs daily!

Can you pause for a moment and think of a world where wages are paid daily instead of a monthly accumulated salary? Don’t you think life would be enjoyable/tolerable for the majority, since no one will go to bed as it were hungry?

I want to believe this was what made the Lord give this advice! Read it;

Matthew 6:34

NIV

[34] Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Worry is created by anxiety, which itself is the product of uncertainty! Not knowing what lies ahead ( tomorrow)

If we can stop the “ thinking of tomorrow “ there will be no anxiety let alone worry. But this can only happen if our daily needs are met and assured.

If we are assured that every day we shall be fed who will worry about tomorrow? When I go to work each day and am returning home I’ll bring food along why would I worry?

It is indeed true that God created a perfect world and put in place a system that can take care of human needs daily.

Unfortunately, man altered the system to his hurt with the introduction of living monthly instead of daily.

The world would have been a pleasant place devoid of suffering had we maintained the daily structured system of reward. You work and at the end of the day, you are paid!

Under this arrangement, you can put food on the table for your dependents. Hmm, to discredit this system man labelled it with a derogatory expression “ hand to mouth “.

Interestingly, evidence seems to suggest that many who live by this system ( per day ) are well, sound and healthy as against many who live on a monthly salary.

Compare the lifestyles of private (self-employed) with public employees, so you get the picture and wisdom of the “ give us this day our daily bread ”recommendation!

So, teaching us to “number our days” is a call to reset the system we have inherited.

My thoughts.
