Destination: Which Way Are You Heading?

Destination: Which Way Are You Heading?

John 14:4-6

NIV

[4] You know the way to the place where I am going.”

[5] Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

[6] Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

I remember when I first arrived in Headington, Oxford I stayed on campus for a few days without going to the city centre though I needed a few items for use The reason was simple, I didn’t know how to get around! I felt shy to ask for help.

There was no Google Maps at the time. It had not yet been invented or created.

After a day or two when life was getting rough due to my lacking these basic items, I decided to go out on my own. And guess what I got lost. I struggled to find my way back to campus.

During the first weeks when lectures began, I made friends with some African students, fortunately, some lived in England so they knew their way around places.

The first thing they suggested to me was to buy a guidebook. Interestingly there are guidebooks covering the entire country, mainly focused on streets. If you are in Oxford there is one solely for use there.

Oh, they also made me know that I can approach any Policeman I meet and ask for directions. Something I did when I visited London! Though some helped, others confused me the more!

Thankfully I bought a copy which settled my fear of getting lost in town! I bought those of other county’s I visited during my stay

To know one’s destination especially how to get there is very important in life.

The same applies to Christianity, Jesus once told his disciples “You know the way to the place where I am going.”! He didn’t land when one ( Thomas) raised his hands to say Massa (sic) “

Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Did you notice? He said they don’t know the “ where “ and the “ how”. A destination is made up of two things the place and the how to get there.

I guess you’ve heard said “ if you don’t know where you are going any direction to take will lead you there “

It is one thing to know the place and another to know how to get there! We know a place by hearing others tell us of it. This is a theoretical approach, which creates in us a desire to visit the place.

We know Heaven through the stories and descriptions the scriptures provide! Read the book of Revelation and some of the things Jesus said about the place in the Gospels.

Critical to the issue is how to get there. Here is where mankind is divided. Though everyone would love to be there, sadly only a few will make it. Why? Because they are not paying attention to the map!

It was to avoid this that Jesus explicitly said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

I rest my case. Want to go to Heaven? Here is the answer to the question “How do I get there ?” The Guide Book is the Scriptures, consult it regularly as you travel the way.

There may be junctions or bypasses etc make sure you don’t miss them. Most importantly always keep your eyes on the road!
