An Enemy:A Definition

Psalm 5:9

ERV

My enemies never tell the truth. They only want to destroy people. Their words come from mouths that are like open graves. They use their lying tongues to deceive others.

There are times when I try to discern the mindset ( of the writer) behind some of the verses in the scriptures that I read. One such effort brought this to my attention, which is a truth that cannot be denied.

Surely you'll not expect an “ enemy” to acknowledge and sing your praise, here is a clear case where the writer wrote from his experience; a truth we all know!

What you've read is a definition of an enemy in case you don't know who an enemy is; please read it again! The following is a guide to help you identify one. Call it a “beginner's guide”!

An enemy is simply any insincere person, a double-faced and double-tongued person, who speaks from both corners of his mouth!

An enemy is any unprincipled person who has no standards to guide his conduct and behaviour, whose desire is to play to the gallery for the sake of an advantage or a gain.

An enemy is a compromiser, who bends the rules to suit his selfish goals and interests. To him, it is not about the means but the ends, not how you got there but that you got there! The philosophy of an enemy is “ the end justifies the means”, and not the other way round.

The most dangerous enemy to watch is the one who “ eats and drinks” with you yet his heart is not with you. Isn't this what Jesus said?

Matthew 10

KJV

36+ And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Long before Jesus said this, the psalmist had this to say as a vivid description

Psalms 41

KJV

9+ Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

Jeremiah 9:4-5

NIV

"Beware of your friends; do not trust anyone in your clan. For every one of them is a deceiver, and every friend a slanderer.

[5] Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning.
